The Ultimate Gear

Efficient Packing is the best way to travel

The section is dedicated to what I term, "Ultimate Travel Gear" which is the compilation of the best, and most efficient way to travel.

Packing efficiently can save you hours waiting for luggage. You carry on one piece of luggage while others need a Sherpa to get through an airport.

Macintosh Powerbook

Powerbook

At the top of the list for computing, connectivity and a portable office away from home, is my number one pick, the Macintosh Powerbook. This portable computer rocks. It's only 1 inch thick, has a beautiful monitor, and can store and develop your digital photos, MP3's and even make DVD movies. See below for accessories to add, but you'll want an Airport Wireless Card, DVD/CD-RW drive, Virtual PC and FileMaker for a complete portable office solution.

TravelPro Roll Aboard Luggage

TravelPro

I've had my TravelPro Rollaboard for almost 10 years now, and it's the only luggage I pack. This amazing innovation allows me to carry-on my weeks worth of clothes, including a tuxedo, two pairs of shoes and all the trimmings.

Carry-On luggage must meet airline requirements. Currently the basic rule is that carry on baggage must be no taller than 22 inches, no wider than 14 inches, and no deeper than 9 inches. TravelPro easily fits in both overhead and under-seat storage areas.

Olympus Digital Camera

Olympus Digital Camera

I use a Olympus to take all the photos on the CruisingReview site. Using a compact camera has alot of advantages. First, you can take it anywhere. Second, with over 1,000 image capacity, you can take an entire trips worth of photos

Take spare rechargeable batteries if you use the flash

Eagle Creek Bath Kit

Bath Kit

This is a great way to organize your bath gear. I use it everywhere I go, just hang it up in the bathroom, and you're set. No packing or unpacking.

Zip Wallet

Wallet

I only take one or two credit cards, a photo ID, and some business cards when I travel. Take only what you need, and what can be replaced if lost.

Lands End Blazer and Pants

Travel Friendly Blazer

Lands' End offers some great products. I just bought a charcoal-heather blazer which is 100% wool, and it rarely wrinkles. This is a great blazer. I wore the same blazer for evenings aboard ships, and would bring a variety of shirts to wear underneath. We don't have any affiliation with Lands' End yet, so we are referring people to the Formal Link as listed.

Rockport Shoes

Rockport Shoes

I have both the boat shoes, and the dress shoes (black). On Curacao, I walked to Mambo Beach Bar from the ship, which was no small feat (almost 2 hours of walking). Even after all that, my feet felt great ! I use the dress shoes for my tuxedo (formal nights). The dress shoes are large enough that I can almost put another pair of evening shoes within them, saving even more space.

Starter Kit

Eagle Creek has some really innovative packing systems. The cube system is a great way to organize gear in your Rollaboard.

Nextel Tri-Band GSM Phone

Tri Band Phone for Worldwide Use

Need to stay connected ? The Nextel Tri-band works in most parts of the world. It has the valuable GSM network access, which is available on some new shipbuilds. Yes, they actually have cruise ships with multiple cells onboard, that can take your call, route it via satellite, and back to it's land based destination.

iPod Music for those on the go

iPod

iPod is another great Apple product. Best of all, it's compact, and can be used for spare data storage. Firewire connected, it automatically updates and charges from your Titantium when plugged in. From the Amazon site: The iPod's 5 GB hard drive holds 100 hours of high-quality music, and it connects to your Mac via superfast FireWire. We were able to transfer a single CD in about 10 seconds and a full hard drive in 10 to 15 minutes. If you lack a built-in FireWire connector, which all new Macs ship with, you can add a FireWire PC Card to most older PowerBooks or a FireWire PCI card to most G3 and G4 towers. Plug the iPod into the FireWire port and the iPod is mounted as a hard drive. The included iTunes 2 software automatically launches and will synchronize your computer's digital audio collection with the iPod. You can also manually manage what files get transferred. The iPod plays the MP3 music format, but it also plays old AIFF and WAV formats. The iPod's 10-hour-plus lithium battery also recharges over the FireWire port. An AC adapter comes with the unit for charging away from a computer. The battery recharges to 80 percent of capacity in about an hour, full capacity in about three hours. The iPod has a 32 MB built-in RAM cache that buffers about 20 minutes of music. This is extremely helpful when you're exercising, and it keeps battery life high. When we've used the iPod on long trips and travel about town, it's been hard to run the battery down at all.

Use this card to expand your 8mb standard card in your Olympus (which gives you approximately 122 photos) to 128 MB for over 1,000 photos.

Battery Charger

Battery Charger

Buying replacement batteries for your digital camera can get expensive. Some batteries cost in excess of $16.00 per set. Why not buy a recharger and reuse them ? Buy once, use many times. I usually take two or three spare sets of batteries along, but have found that I can get along with two sets for an entire week (including flash photos) which amounts to over 766 photos.

Virtual PC

I currently run Virtual PC on my iMac, and can run a Windows 98 and Mac platform simultaneously. What's neat is that I can surf both on the Mac and Windows site at the same time. In addition, I can run a web cam on the Windows site for applications like Yahoo Messenger, and iVisit, or even Netmeeting. From the Amazon site: Once you get over the creepy experience of seeing a Windows desktop on the face of your lovely Mac (and hearing the Windows start-up chimes reverberating from your speakers), you might start to appreciate the benefits that a program like Virtual PC 4.0 has to offer. For those Mac users who need to occasionally access Windows 98, Virtual PC 4.0 supplies just the solution without making you invest in a new machine.

Use Mac and Windows at the same time.

FileMaker 5.0

FileMaker is the king of databases. Easy to use, and very functional. This entire site was developed using FileMaker. I have done a FileMaker solution which allows you to use your WAP enabled cell phone to access data from FileMaker. What is even more cool is that with the Serial Program I developed, you can use your cell phone to turn on and off devices, via WAP, and via FileMaker, and with the help of X10 modules. Imagine turning on your hot tub via cell phone ! From Amazon: FileMaker Pro combines powerful information management and surprising ease of use. It handles all business data-management needs, including job tracking, asset management, inventory, customer information, and payroll, over the company intranet, local area networks (LANs), or even wired or wireless handhelds.

Rechargeable Batteries

I usually carry 2-3 sets of rechargeable batteries with me when I travel. That way you're not stuck trying to find AA or other specialty batteries for your digital camera.

Segway Scooter

Segway

The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is a truly 21st-century idea. A two-wheeled electric vehicle that's practical, efficient, slightly miraculous, and an undeniably fun way of getting around, it's as different from a bicycle or motorcycle as the original personal computers were from their lumbering, mainframe predecessors.
